Acuario Mazatlán

  • Location: Mazatlán, Mexico

Client: LIQUEN / Government of Mexico

    Size: 150,000 Square Feet

  • Working in close collaboration with Mexico City architecture firm Tatiana Bilbao Studio, Space Haus completed exhibit design, graphic design, wayfinding and content development for an ambitious new aquarium focused on the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California. The Gulf is one of the world’s most diverse marine habitats and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The exhibit narrative works in conjunction with the exhibit layout, tracing a route from the ocean depths to the shore and up to the forested mountains surrounding Mazatlán. The forests are represented by a two-story aviary with a tree canopy walk-though, bringing visitors face-to-face with spectacular tropical birds. An interactive laboratory at the end of the journey allows further exploration into animal senses and species survival skills.

Completion of this project is expected in 2023.
