Forest Preserve ecologists use this aquatic laboratory to raise native freshwater mussels and non-game fish for re-introduction to local DuPage county waterways, and to monitor the water quality and other components of these waterways. Additionally, the lab accommodates ongoing research regarding habitat restoration in urban waterways and species re-introduction. This is the only facility of its kind in Illinois.

Space Haus designed, fabricated and installed the free-standing plumbing system, which includes raceways for mussel propagation, make-up water capacity and fish holding tanks.
